James Hoyes Panton (1847-1898), educator, was born in Ontario and moved to Winnipeg, Manitoba in the early 1880's. He was a member of the Manitoba Historical Society and collected geological specimens throughout the province. In 1884 he returned to Ontario to be professor of Geology and Natural History at the Ontario Agricultural College (University of Guelph) where he remained until 1897. He died February 2, 1898.

Contents include one holograph letter from James Hoyes Panton to Drinkwater (C.P.R.) requesting a pass to travel free during the summer in order to do geological research, dated April 16, 1884.
