Why did you choose Waterloo's Master of Public Service Program?
The Master of Public Service is a very versatile program that provides graduates with immense knowledge and work experience in the public sector. I chose this program over other counterparts because of the exceptional quality and integrity of the education offered by the University of Waterloo and its strong co-operative education prospects. I believe that such opportune co-op experiences allow students to network and gain valuable professional experience in the public sphere that can potentially lead to an excellent career.
Why do you want to work in the public service?
I have always envisioned having a meaningful career where my services make a difference in the lives of people. A career in public service will give me the opportunity to cater to Canada and work alongside diligent public servants.
What is your dream public service career?
I am interested in various areas of public service which makes this question rather difficult. At the moment I would like to work for regional projects of the federal government that promote economic development of smaller or poorly performing communities. I want to offer exceptional service to development programs that invest in community growth and rebuilding.
What was it like to be a Waterloo MPS student?
This program is very intensive and it provides students with more than adequate training to thrive as public servants. I have received continuous support and guidance from dedicated professors, director and admin, which made this a very positive learning experience. Majority of the second semester focuses on group work which effectively trains students to operate in different group settings. Some of the coursework may be overwhelming, but as a student I have learned to become more organized, productive and meet tight deadlines. I believe that this program has successfully simulated workplace bureaucracy and prepared students to become efficient public servants. As a Waterloo MPS student, I am very hopeful that the training provided by this program will help me pursue a successful career in the public service.
What are your favourite MPS moments?
MPS provided me with the platform to connect with and learn from a very diverse cohort of students from different education backgrounds. I tremendously enjoyed serving as the Director of Finance at the Master of Public Service Association where I had the opportunity to work and collaborate with my peers on numerous occasions. One of my favourite MPS moments was being featured on the Master of Public website as a MPS15 co-op student.
What did you learn about yourself?
I have learned that I am more persistent and patient than I give myself credit for. I was amazed by my ability to cope with the simultaneous workloads under tremendous pressure to do well. I have learned to perform better by always keeping on top of my work. My experience in this program has made me more self-assured and confident, and I aim to continue pushing myself to do better.
What advice would you give to someone who is interested in the program?
In order to succeed in this program, students must be passionate about pursuing a career in the public service, take constructive advice from professors and effectively collaborate with peers. I opted for the French Option offered by this program and it has enhanced my ability to communicate in French. I would advise future students to consider this option especially if aiming to have a career in the federal government.
What other wisdom do you wish to impart onto others?
Try to take as much as you can from the wonderful experience of being a graduate student at the MPS program. If you are passionate about pursuing a career in the public sector and willing to put in the effort, this program may be the right choice for you.
