Windows 10 Semi Annual Channel releases

What is happening? As part of the continuous upgrade process for Windows 10, MFCF will be advertising a managed upgrade via System Center Configuration Manager (SCCM) for Windows 10 workstations that are joined to Nexus.  The advertisement will allow you to select when the upgrade applies. Machines running Windows 7, 8, or 8.1 are not affected. This is expected to become a yearly event so these Windows 10 workstations are always on a supported release.

When is this happening? Various times in May and June 2018. The upgrade will be available for you to run via the Software Centre (Start > Microsoft System Center > Software Center > Operating Systems). The update is expected to take approximately 1-2 hours to complete.  There will be a pilot period and then a general release.  More communication will be sent as the process progresses.

Deployment Deadline:  A deadline will be set at which time the update will install automatically.  It is highly recommended to apply the update before the deadline.  The deadline will be highlighted in the communications.

What is the impact?  The upgrade does not reimage the computer. It will only run on Windows 10 systems and upgrade the current OS to release 1709.  Applications will not be removed or reinstalled. There should be no functional changes to the systems. Some icons and customized visual settings may revert to defaults. If you note any new anomalies on the upgraded systems please contact MFCF Help, or ext. 36323.  

What do you need to do?  Pilot users are expected to run the upgrade soon after it is offered.  They are expected to report new issues and work with MFCF to resolve them.  General availability users will have a period of 3 weeks to apply the upgrade.  MFCF recommends people in a department arrange amongst themselves to apply the upgrade at different times so not everyone is adjusting to the changes at the same time.

Applying the update

The Software Centre will remind you that the advertisement is available every time you logon to your workstation. (See Pop-up screenshot attached). Your choices are to upgrade right away, defer the upgrade to a later time, or to snooze the reminder.

Further action

The first logon after the upgrade will be slow as the user profile has to be reloaded
