Dean's Message - April 2012

In the Faculty of Mathematics, we are surrounded by extraordinarily talented people. It’s my privilege to acknowledge these members of our Faculty who have been recognized recently for their ability to perform and inspire.

Congratulations to:

  • Distinguished Teaching Award winner Alfred Menezes, professor and chair of the Department of Combinatorics & Optimization.
  • Musical Math students Andrew Song, Nat (Chun Ho) Leung, David (Li) Yin, and Young Ho Yoo of orchestra@uwaterloo, whose talents were honoured at the biannual concerto and aria competition.
  • Bernoulli Trials Contest winners Sam Eisenstat (first place), Boyu Li (second place) and Jimmy He (third place) who demonstrated outstanding mathematical intuition in this recreational contest.

We will be hosting two very special events in the month of April.

Ming Li, Canada Research Chair in Bioinformatics, will present “Information distance from a question to an answer” at a Faculty wide colloquium on April 18 at 3:30 pm in William G. Davis Computer Research Centre (DC) room 1302 with a reception to follow.

On April 27 at 3 pm, we will celebrate the dedication of the Bruce White Atrium in our new Mathematics 3 (M3) building. The atrium is being named in recognition of a retired high school math teacher, Bruce White, by John Hele (BMath ’80), executive vice-president and Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of Arch Capital Group Ltd. Come out and hear how Mr. White’s lifelong commitment to fostering students’ passion for mathematics continues to inspire. RSVP
