Dean's Message - April 2015

Congratulations are in order this month for a number of people in the Math community:

• Combinatorics & Optimization faculty member Henry Wolkowicz has been selected as a SIAM Fellow
• Computer Science doctoral students Laura Inozemtseva and Xu Chu have been selected as Microsoft Research PhD Fellows
• Laura Inozemtseva was also the winner of the Faculty’s Murray Martin Prize for the Best Research Paper by a Mathematics Graduate Student
• Statistics & Actuarial Science doctoral student Nathaniel Stevens received one of the University's Amit and Meena Chakma Award for Exceptional Teaching by a Student
• Applied Mathematics master’s student Tawsif Khan won the Three-Minute Thesis competition Faculty heat, and will represent Mathematics at the University-wide competition on April 2
• Undergraduates Tianxiao Liu, Yi Shan, Letian Chen and Zhengyu Gu were the prize winners in the Bernouli Trials Contest
• Computer Science undergraduate Liam Horne was named the Co-op Student of the Year for the Faculty
• Undergraduate and tennis player Joe Zeng was the Federation of Students male Rookie of the Year among the University’s varsity athletes

Colleagues who supervise undergraduate researchers are encouraged to nominate a student for the Jessie W.H. Zou Memorial Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Research

MathSoc invites all professors to join undergraduate students at an all-ages “Party with Profs” on April 2 at 5:30 pm in the Grad House

Finally, all are invited to the Orchestra Waterloo spring concert on April 2 at 8 pm in the Humanities Theatre
