Dean's Message - December 2012

The Math Graduate Committee is already putting together the yearbook to celebrate our graduating class of 2013! Even in this digital age of instant updates and photo sharing, the yearbooks give us a fun and lasting way to remember our students. We’ve got some extra copies of past yearbooks. If you would like a free copy, please see Amy in Mathematics & Computing Building (MC) room 5114.

We’re moving ahead with renovations to the sixth floor of MC. Furniture will be removed and stored during the first week in December, with demolition due to begin afterwards. The interior spaces will be redesigned to provide more collaborative space, increase the use of natural lighting, and provide wider hallways and easier way-finding. Applied Mathematics and the Centre for Education in Mathematics and Computing (CEMC) will be moving upstairs.

Congratulations to the Big E and Special K contest winners Yuelin (Julian) Sun, Kaiyu (Kevin) Wu, Vitalik Buterin and Yifan Hu. Thanks to Stephen New and Ken Davidson for providing this opportunity for our students.

Our Cheriton School of Computer Science has had an exciting month with research honours. Srinivasan Keshav was named the Cisco Chair in Smart Grid. Frank Tompa will receive the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal in recognition of his “significant contributions to text data and design systems for maintaining large reference texts.” Ian Goldberg of the School’s cryptography, security and privacy research group has been named a University Research Chair. It was also announced recently that this important area will expand thanks to a new Canada Excellence Research Chair in security and privacy for the new digital economy.
