Dean's Message - December 2013

Our students bring a vast array of talents to our campus. They shine in academic competitions, like the Big E and Special K contests. They also take on leadership roles in organizing events. Computer Science (CS) student Brook Jensen led the Humans vs. Zombies fun this term. Apparently Brook can now add “Necromancer” to his resume.

The Centre for Education in Mathematics and Computing (CEMC) recently received a very generous gift from Tom Higgins, recently retired as CEO, president and director of Maple Financial Inc. Higgins’s gift will help expand CEMC outreach in the greater Toronto area.

New Mathematics liaison and outreach officer Mike Miniou has been visiting high school math classes across western Canada over the last few months, helping students understand the real-world applications of math. We’ve been getting great feedback on these visits, including this write-up from two teachers in Tsawwassen, B.C.

Congratulations to Mark Giesbrecht, recently named an Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) Distinguished Scientist.

Congratulations also to Sharon McConnell, promoted to the position of manager, Survey Research Centre.

Finally, welcome to Patty Robinson-Angel, the new administrative coordinator/advisor working with the Centre for Computational Mathematics in Industry and Commerce. Patty will be located in William G. Davis Computer Research Centre (DC) 3141 – please stop by to wish her well in her new position.
