Dean's Message - January 2013

Did you know that 2013 is both International Year of Statistics and the year to recognize the Mathematics of Planet Earth? Join the Department of Statistics & Actuarial Science on January 10 for the 2013 Distinguished Lecture by David Spiegelhalter (Winton Professor of the Public Understanding of Risk, University of Cambridge).

2013 also marks 50 years of outreach by our Centre for Education in Mathematics and Computing (CEMC). This graphic shows the CEMC connections around the world.

Welcome to new faculty members Frank Tip, Cheriton Chair in Software Systems (Computer Science), Jason Bell (Pure Mathematics) and staff member Megan Martin (Combinatorics & Optimization, administrative co-ordinator).

Congratulations to Keshav, named Fellow of the ACM. Ming Li (2006), Tamer Özsu (2006), Ian Munro (2008) and Frank Tompa (2010) have previously been recognized with ACM Fellowships.

A team of Waterloo undergraduates – including Computer Science (CS) student Scott Greenlay - also distinguished themselves by winning the Facebook College Hackathon.

Next time you’re on the fourth floor of Mathematics & Computing Building (MC), take a look at the newly remodeled Tutorial Centre.

Faculty members, please watch for a message from Jack Rehder about the Faculty Council constitution vote taking place next week. I encourage you to vote so that we can be sure that the outcome reflects the actual wishes of the Council.

Last year’s winner of the J.W. Graham Medal in Computing and Innovation  came from a faculty member nomination. If you know of any deserving alumni, please contact Kate Jessop.
