Dean's Message - March 2012

Congratulations to the Waterloo A team - Fred Yin, David Ma, Fredrick Liu, Kevin Yuan, and faculty coach Brent Matheson – for their success in the Rotman International Trading Competition. Fred reports “we were number one in Canada. Beat MIT, Columbia, UPenn, Northwestern, Queens, Duke, Rotman, Windsor, Ivey, etc.!” They also won first place in the BP commodities trading case.

Attracting the best and brightest from around the world has long been one of the strengths of our Faculty. Serge D’Alessio, Andre Jardin, Troy Vasiga and Megan McClellan have been out recruiting students in Asia. They made 34 on-the-spot offers to students in Azerbaijan and 32 in Malaysia.

Thanks to the generosity of Mike and Ophelia Lazaridis, we now have undergraduate scholarships covering full university expenses for students who are medallists in either the International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI) or International Mathematics Olympiad (IMO) before their final year of high school. These outstanding students will fit in nicely at Waterloo.

I am very pleased to announce a new Undergraduate Research Award in the Faculty of Mathematics. Faculty members are invited to nominate a student who is graduating this year and whose research they have supervised. The winner will be recognized at convocation.

Have you heard about the University of Waterloo Computer Museum? Its curators, including Lawrence Folland (manager of research support for the Cheriton School of Computer Science) are ‘preserving the past, one bit at a time’.
