Dean's Message - March 2013

Thanks to everyone involved in the Faculty-wide graduate student recruitment visit. The opportunity for students to visit Waterloo, meet faculty and current students - and experience our environment for themselves - has a great impact as they decide from among multiple offers of admission.

Next up is March Break Open House for future undergraduate students and their families. We’re expecting a record turnout, as application numbers continue to climb.

Our faculty heat in the University-wide Three-Minute Thesis competition took place March 1. Thanks to Keshav for organizing this for our graduate students.

A group of Master of Quantitative Finance students enjoyed this year’s Rotman International Trading Competition, placing first in the Option Trading Case and eighth overall, out of 48 teams.

Congratulations to Ondrej Lhotak, named an Outstanding Young Computer Science Researcher by the Canadian Association of Computer Science.

I was very pleased to congratulate MMath alumna Liz Sandals on her recent appointment as Ontario’s Minister of Education.

Demand for graduates like ours is echoed in this video from Code.org, a non-profit foundation dedicated to growing computer programming education.
