A warm welcome to the hundreds of volunteers on campus this weekend to help mark some of the CEMC contests. Did you know that the Euclid, Fryer, Galois and Hypatia contests were written by students in 584 cities in 50 countries?
Perhaps one of these young contest writers will one day represent Waterloo at the Putnam Mathematical Competition. In the most recent competition the Waterloo team came in fourth overall, which is the 19th time in the top five since 1968. Congratulations to team members Daniel Spivak, Sam Eisenstat, Kangning (Colin) Chen, coach Stephen New, and all of the other students who participated in this demanding event.
Congratulations also to Statistics and Actuarial Science faculty member Grace Yi, recently named a Fellow of the American Statistical Association.
Finally, some great news on the rankings front:
- in the latest annual QS world subject rankings Waterloo is placed 20th for Mathematics, 24th for Computer Science and in the top 100 for Statistics and Operations Research.
- in the latest annual ‘Best Jobs’ list, six of the top ten jobs are linked to the Faculty’s disciplines: 1) actuary 3) mathematician 4) statistician 6) data scientist 8) software engineer and 10) computer systems analyst. This is based on various factors such as working environment, income, outlook and stress
