Dean's Message - November 2015

International Education Week is celebrated around the world this month. We are fortunate to have 2372 international students enriching our Faculty every week! Students can learn about international exchange opportunities at a Go Abroad Information Session on November 5th from 9:30 to 11:30 am in OPT 347.

I’m pleased to announce that Prof. Sivabal Sivaloganathan will serve as the next Chair of the Department of Applied Mathematics beginning July 1, 2016.

Our Master of Quantitative Finance program was recently ranked among the best financial engineering master’s programs in North America. Computer Science had a strong showing in the National Taiwan University and US News and World Report rankings.

The next Bridges lecture “Thinking Machines” will be held November 27th and everyone is welcome.

Finally, it was fun to serve as a judge and present a prize at Codefest, a hackathon organized by the city of Waterloo on the October 24-25 weekend.  More than 100 programmers participated as individuals or in teams to develop apps using Waterloo’s open data. The winners created “Timber”, an app based on the 30000 trees owned by the city.   And, yes, you can organize a meet up at a specific tree.
