Dean's Message - October 2011

Did you know that the University of Waterloo ranks among the top universities in Canada in the number of varsity athletes on this year's Academic Honour Roll (for maintaining an 80% average)? We're proud that 22 of these 143 students are from Math - the woman athlete with the top average at the University is Leanne Stuive, a master's student in Combinatorics and Optimization.

And we also celebrate our Mathletes - on September 23, 350 students took part in The 11th Annual Small c Competition for First and Second Year Students (PDF), including a contingent writing at the Dubai campus. Congratulations to Yipei Zhang and Kangning Chen, who achieved the best scores among first and second year students, respectively. Honourable mentions go to Christopher Hawthorne, Amlesh Jayakumar, Davin Wong, Yi Yuan, Zeying Song, Xiao Kun Yao and Zhao Di. Thanks to J.P. Pretti and colleagues at the CEMC for organizing this fun event.

We’re excited about our new space – please join us for the grand opening of the Mathematics 3 (M3) building on October 21 at 10:30 am.

Colleagues have been asking for events between departments, to help us maintain a strong sense of community across the Faculty. This term we'll try a "Special Faculty Wide Colloquium" in our new M3 classroom – the speaker is Walter Craig for all faculty and students on October 24 at 3:30 pm, followed by refreshments in the M3 atrium.
