Dean's Message - September 2012

Did you know that Faculty of Mathematics students come from 78 different countries – from Azerbaijan to Vietnam?

We’re excited to welcome all of our new and returning students to another term of study in Waterloo and Dubai.

We also welcome new faculty members Kun Liang, Martin Lysy, Yingli Qin and Ruodu Wang (Statistics & Actuarial Science); John Champaign and Frank Tip (Computer Science); and Hany Fahmy (Math-Business); as well as staff members Marie O’Brien-Stockie and Melissa Cambridge as administrative coordinators in Applied Mathematics and Combinatorics & Optimization, respectively.

There are recent accolades to share. Mary Hardy was honoured with the Finlaison Medal from the U.K. Institute and Faculty of Actuaries for her service to the actuarial profession. Ken Davidson won a University of Waterloo Award of Excellence in Graduate Supervision. Ken is the fifth member of our Faculty to receive this honour, previously Frank Tompa (2005), Don Cowan (2006), Mary Thompson (2007) and Robin Cohen (2008).

Best of luck to the Canadian International Olympiad of Informatics (IOI) team, competing in IOI 2012 at Lake Garda, Lombardy, Italy September 23-30. Coached by Troy Vasiga, the team members are Canadian Computing Competition Stage 2 (PDF) gold medallists Angus Kong, Daniel Hui, Geoffry Song and Vitalik Buterin.
