Dean's Message - September 2014

Orientation for our incoming undergraduate and graduate students kicks off this week. It will be great to see the campus full of students again.

Some of you might have seen students literally bubble-wrapped while playing soccer in the William G. Davis Computer Research Centre (DC) quad over the summer. Second-year math and business students Mandy Gu and Edward Qian have launched a company to bring zorbs to Waterloo. It looks like fun!

I’m pleased to announce that Meghan McLellan has been promoted to the Director, Undergraduate Recruitment and International starting today. Stephanie Massel has been hired as the Administrative Officer for the Cheriton School of Computer Science starting September 15, 2014.

Congratulations to Computer Science (CS) PhD candidate Martin Derka, awarded a Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship in support of his work searching for error-correcting codes that improve the reliability of digital communication.

New (and nearly new) instructors in Mathematics and Computer Science are invited to a half-day Teaching Workshop, including "n Things You Always Wanted to Know about Teaching at UWaterloo, n ≥ 10 (PDF)". More experienced instructors may want to join in for “Ignite Our Teaching Practice”.
