Dean's Message - September 2016

Here’s a fun bit of nostalgia: the theme for Math orientation in 1993 was “M*A*T*H 1993rd” – carried out with khaki uniform shirts for the leaders, green M*A*S*H-type t-shirts for the incoming students, and identification dog tags for all. While this year’s theme has been kept secret, I’m sure the orientation leaders have a fun and informative set of events planned. I look forward to seeing many of you as we formally welcome the new undergraduate and new graduate students next week.

The new term also brings new colleagues. We will welcome sixteen new faculty members at the Faculty Banquet on September 22nd.

J.P. Pretti and Troy Vasiga returned from this year’s International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI) in Kazan, Russia with some great news. All four members of the Canadian team brought home a medal!

  • Gold (and 7th overall) for Timothy Li
  • Silver (and 27th overall) for Kevin Sun
  • Bronze for Jeffrey Xiao and Farbod Yadegarian

Timothy, Jeffrey and Farbod will be joining Math as incoming undergraduate students this fall. Congratulations to these outstanding students and their dedicated coaches.

I was pleased to note colleagues in the media over the past few weeks. Keshav weighed in on airline computer networking systems when they were in the news, and graduate student Kapil Haresh Vigneswaren told the story of how he avoided having his phone and laptop hacked. Thanks to both for taking the time to share their expertise. Media coverage helps project our profile and remind everyone  that Waterloo is a national resource.

The Women in Mathematics Committee is hosting a number of events this month. Faculty, staff, post-docs and students are invited to attend.  For details, including the intended audiences, and to register, please visit Women in Math Events
