Mathematics Alumni Weekend

Saturday, June 1, 2019 8:30 am - 4:30 pm EDT (GMT -04:00)

On the Shoulders of Giants

Celebrating our Past, Building our Future

On the shoulds of giants pics
Mathematicians and computer scientists of today build on the knowledge and discoveries made by those who have come before them. Two such giants in the field were Professor William Tutte and J. Wesley Graham.

This Alumni Weekend, the Faculty of Mathematics will offer alumni, family, and friends an engaging lecture series that will showcase these incredible faculty founders who were ahead of their era, followed by a talk from an alumnus doing cutting edge work in that area.

Schedule:

8:30 am - Dean, Eggs, and Ham: Dean's Notes (DC 1301, Fishbowl)

"The talent of our people, the quality of our education, and the depth of our research have earned the University of Waterloo a global reputation in mathematics, statistics, and computer science. We will build on these to embrace the challenges of today and the opportunities of the future."

9:30 am - William Tutte: Mathematician and Codebreaker (DC 1302)

"We should never forget how lucky we were to have men like Professor Tutte in our darkest hour and the extent to which their work not only helped protect Britain itself but [saved] countless lives."

DAVID CAMERON British Prime Minister,
in a 2012 letter to Tutte’s remaining family in Newmarket, England

10:45 am - Entering the Era of Quantum Computing: Challenges and Opportunities (DC 1302)

Presented by Professor Michele Mosca (BMath '95), co-founder of Waterloo's cryptography centre and the Institute for Quantum Computing, and is a leader in the field of quantum information.

Emerging quantum technologies will change the way that our online information is stored and secured. To be cyber-safe we must be quantum-safe. It’s possible, but we need to start planning now if we want to be ready in time. Quantum-safe cryptography expert Prof. Michele Mosca, co-founder of the Institute for Quantum Computing at the University of Waterloo, provides insight into the new security challenges that will arise with evolving quantum technologies and what needs to happen to protect ourselves from security threats such as viruses, fraud and identity theft.
