You MUST apply early for your study permit. It can take 60 business days or 3 months to process! You must have a valid study permit to attend university in Canada and/or apply to take the summer 8-week IELAS program - before June 21st deadline date.
How do I obtain a study permit?
What is IELAS?
The Intensive English Language for Academic Studies (IELAS) program, is an 8-week intensive English language program that is available in July - August. Program offered through Waterloo-Conestoga College.
IELAS meets the English language requirement of the Faculty of Mathematics (and Cheriton School of Computer Science) at University of Waterloo. Only available to those that have received a conditional offer of admission for the fall/September term within the Faculty of Mathematics.
About IELAS Program
The intensive eight-week program is the same English language (ELS) program that students in our level IV - Mathematics/English Language for Academic Studies (Math/ELAS) program take, but it is an intensive English program condensed into 8-weeks, and no UWaterloo Mathematics (MATH) course is taken.
IELAS has an academic focus that provides an opportunity for students to acquire the reading, writing, pronunciation, listening and speaking skills needed for post-secondary studies.
Who can take IELAS?
If you have been sent a conditional Offer of admission and accepted to the Faculty of Mathematics for the September/fall term, based on your academic background and grades, but your English language skills and scores are below our minimum admission requirements - then you are eligible.
You have the option to either take the 8-week intensive English language (IELAS) program*, or you may choose to take the one-term (4 months) of Math/ELAS that begins in September/fall term.Consult the 'conditions' in your Offer of Admission letter and provide any additional documents, scores or grades, etc. to the Registrar's Office before proceeding with the IELAS process. Refer to submitting your documents
Since the official offers of admission are processed and sent by the Registrar's Office on a rotating basis, I will not know when you have been granted an offer through the Faculty of Mathematics..
I will be monitoring the registration list for the IELAS 8-week program, as students must be first approved through the Faculty of Mathematics at Waterloo.
When do IELAS classes start?
Tuesday July 2 - Friday August 23, 2019,
Monday through Friday 8:30 am - 4:00 pm
Note: Monday July 1, 2019 our offices will be closed, Canada Day holiday observed and on Monday August 5 - Civic holiday.
On the first day - Tuesday, July 2 you will report directly to Waterloo - Conestoga College for 8:30 am (signs will be posted). You will receive your IELAS class schedule and book-list to purchase the required books.
Please bring your Passport on the first day of IELAS classes.
Note: Students must be available to attend all classes for this intensive program. No late arrivals - no exceptions!
We strongly recommend that you plan your arrival to Canada (Waterloo, Ontario) earlier than the first day. This will allow you some time to adjust to your surroundings, review bus stops and schedule, and settle in before you begin this intensive program.

How do I obtain a study permit?
However, you will be a registered student for this program through Conestoga College as tuition fees are paid directly to them.
What are the advantages of taking the summer (8 week) IELAS program?
You have the option and can select which program will be the right fit for you:
Math/ELAS (1 academic term/4 months): September to December
The choice is yours to either begin in September in our Math/ELAS program as you adjust through the transitions from high school.
Refer to details indicated with your Offer of Admission for the fall term.
- You will attend two – separate campuses.
- You will take one – Mathematics course (Calculus 1) for credit towards your BMath or BCS degree here at UWaterloo, as well as taking the level IV – English language courses taught at Waterloo-Conestoga College.
- You are in a full-time program registered at UWaterloo.
IELAS (8-weeks): Tuesday July 2 to Friday August 23, 2019
(Note: a separate application process and fees paid directly to Conestoga College)
If you are able to arrive earlier in Waterloo, apply separately and take the 8-week IELAS program on your own, to meet our English requirements.
You would complete the program in eight weeks and satisfy our English language admission requirements before the start of September.
Upon successful completion of the 8-week Intensive English language program, you are able to begin your full-time studies in Mathematics, rather than taking a full term of Math/ELAS from September – December. You will continue with new students who are beginning their studies in September!
Deadline to apply
You must submit all required supporting documents along with full payment, by Friday, June 21, 2019 for this 8-week IELAS program.

How to make a room reservation?
Reservations can be made by registering online at https://webreg.uwaterloo.ca/onlinereg/Register/default.aspx?code=C000529 or by calling our Reservation Department directly at 1-800-565-5410.
- IELAS students will be asked for a $200 deposit via Visa, MasterCard or AMEX to guarantee their reservation that will be applied to the balance of their account. At check-in, they will be asked to pay for the balance of the first month. Please note that we require 48 hours cancellation notice to receive a 90% refund on your deposit. No refunds will be granted for cancellations received after that time, for no shows, or early checkouts.
Please note that if you wish to reserve a room for yourself and another individual, you will be required to indicate the name of your roommate on the reservation form. The deposit will be applied to the account of the individual who made the booking.
How can I move into full-time math studies?
To complete the IELAS program successfully, you will need to pass with final grades of at least 70% in each of the Conestoga College's English language courses.
This will meet the English language admission requirement for the Faculty of Mathematics, at Waterloo. You are expected to attend all classes of courses that you are registered in. Program regulations include attendance for evaluation purposes.
NOTE: These are the same requirements as for our Math/ELAS program
Will I need to submit or take another English language test?
No - but as part of the admission requirements, you do need to provide one of the test options as proof of your English and your level of proficiency if you wish to study in either the IELAS or Math/ELAS programs.
No additional English language testing will be required after studying summer IELAS or Math/ELAS (or during the program).
Will the IELAS program qualify for co-op?
No. Taking one-term level IV ELAS (or 8-week intensive English) program would regrettably not allow you to begin in a co-op program.
To be considered for a position in a co-op program, you can apply during your first year in post-secondary studies at Waterloo.
Information sessions about applying to co-op are held each term. Check with the Math Undergraduate Office, during your first year, for the dates for these sessions. Admission into co-op is based on available spaces and your grades (above 85%) during your 1A and 1B terms.
