MME professors awarded $4 .4 million in funding from the Ontario Research Fund
Four professors in the Department of Mechanical and Mechatronics Engineering have been awarded a total of $4.4 million from the Ontario Research Fund (ORF) to support research that will help drive innovation for the province’s future.
Dr. Hamid Jahed has been awarded $2 million dollars to help make the automotive industry more environmentally friendly by using cold-spray technology to reduce vehicle emissions and the overall weight of a car. Plus this research is also looking at ways to join different materials with coatings and repaired parts to reduce waste and improve the heat management in batteries that are most commonly found in electric vehicles. This will continue to create sustainable transportation in the near future.
Dr. Ehsan Toyserkani has also added $2 million in funding to his research in advancing metal additive manufacturing (3D printing) to be more sustainable. This award will support the research of artificial intelligence algorithms and real-time sensors to detect and correct defects during many additive manufacturing processes. This work will make additive manufacturing even more accessible to a variety of industries.
In addition to the funding above, two professors in MME also received ORF Research Infrastructure for their projects. Dr. Kyle Daun has received $300,000, and Dr. Yue Hu has received $100,000.
