LIVING the Dementia Journey Logo

The Murray Alzheimer Research and Education Program (MAREP), in the Faculty of Applied Health Sciences, University of Waterloo, with its partner, Schlegel-UW Research Institute for Aging (RIA) have created a two-time award-winning training program that focuses on supporting the well-being of persons living with dementia across the continuum of care.

LIVING the Dementia Journey is intended to help organizations (e.g., long-term care, retirement and community settings) create a shared understanding and philosophy of dementia care that builds awareness, understanding, and compassion.

Program Modules

LEARNING about the experience of dementia

  • Learn about factors that contribute to the experience of living with dementia

IMPROVING well-being

  • Support and nurture the well-being of each person using creativity and collaboration

VALIDATING and honouring each person in the moment

  • Validate and honour each person’s reality, experiences, contributions, and preferences

INTERPRETING personal expressions, actions, and reactions

  • Understand differences between ‘behaviours’ and personal expressions, actions, and reactions; work proactively to support each person and individualize responsive supports

NURTURING all relationships

  • Nurture relationships with all care partners to enhance quality of life

GREETING each day as an opportunity

  • Greet each day as an opportunity for meaning, purpose, and growth

The training is available in three ways:

OVERVIEW WORKSHOP (1 DAY)

For care partners, family members, and persons living with dementia.

  • Summary of the 6 program modules.
  • Each participant will receive a workbook.
  • Participants will have an increased understanding of dementia and be introduced to strategies to support the well-being of persons living with dementia.

IN-DEPTH WORKSHOP (2 DAYS)

For care partners working in long-term care, retirement or community settings.

  • Deep dive into each of the 6 program modules and how they can be applied in practice.
  • Each participant will receive a workbook.
  • Participants will fully understand the 6 modules and be able to implement learnings and strategies to support the well-being of persons living with dementia.

FACILITATOR WORKSHOP (3 DAYS)

For organizations interested in building in-house capacity to train and support their team.

  • Train-the-trainer workshop with an in-depth review of the 6 program modules and adult learning and facilitation skills.
  • Each participant will receive a Facilitator Manual and all necessary teaching resources.
  • Participants will learn to effectively teach adult learners about LIVING the Dementia Journey and be certified facilitators of the Overview and In-Depth Workshops.

Awards

  • LDJ Leadership Accepting the OLTCA AwardIn 2016, LIVING the Dementia Journey was recognized by Argentum (USA senior living leadership association) as an Innovative Education/Training program in memory care.
  • In 2017, LIVING the Dementia Journey was awarded:  Best New Product or Service in Long-Term Care by the Ontario Long Term Care Association.
