Bill Gates Invests in Alzheimer's Disease Detection Development

Tuesday, August 7, 2018

Bill Gates makes headlines again in the world of Alzheimer’s disease after announcing that he will be investing in the Alzheimer’s Drug Discovery Foundation (ADDF). Together with Leonard Lauder, the Dolby family, the Charles and Helen Schwab Foundation and others, they will be donating $30 million to start the Diagnostic Accelerator. This fund will help researchers develop new biomarkers for early detection of Alzheimer’s disease. The ADDF is requesting proposals for research with preliminary data to get into proof of concept studies and validation studies on biomarkers. One of the goals the ADDF director, Dr. Howard Fillit, has identified was the development of a blood test to detect amyloid beta. He thinks this would allow screening at an earlier stage and assist in early detection.
