Feeling Older Decreases Satisfaction with Sex Life

Monday, June 5, 2017

A recent study from the University of Waterloo set out to find the effect of aging on older adults’ sex lives. Amy Estill, the master’s student behind the project, outlined the value: “sexuality is an important part of human life across the life span and it's something that's often not considered for older adults because there is a stigma around it,” she stated, explaining that her goal is to “normalize conversations around sexuality and health for older adults.” Estill used the results of a study of adults between their forties and seventies that took place between 1995 and 2005 and consisted of sex-related questions. Responses indicated that feeling younger did not increase the frequency of sex, potentially because it requires the alignment of two people’s attitudes and availability. However, people who reported feeling younger had a greater interest in sex and were more likely to find sexual activity enjoyable. While previous research has found physical health to be predictive of sexuality aspects with age, Estill’s study shows that beliefs around sex and aging may be equally important. “For researchers, the next step would be to use this information to explore more psychological factors… this is a growing field, so hopefully it inspires people to consider these factors but also other psychological factors that might influence sexuality.”
