High Carbohydrate Intake Associated with Early Death

Monday, September 4, 2017

A large-scale study from McMaster University has shown that contrary to popular belief, high-carbohydrate diets are associated with early death while high-fat diets are not. In fact, “increased consumption of dietary fats is associated with a lower risk of death,” said senior author and nutritional epidemiologist Mahshid Dehghan. This is true for saturated, mono-unsaturated, and poly-unsaturated fats. The international recommendation for saturated fat intake is less than 10% of daily calories; this study suggests otherwise. “We found no evidence that below 10 per cent of energy from saturated fat is beneficial — and going below seven per cent is even harmful,” Dehghan stated. Cardiovascular disease is a major cause of death all around the world; it is also a risk factor for other disorders such as vascular dementia. Luckily, diet is considered a modifiable risk factor for these conditions. Diets consisting of over 60% of calories coming from carbohydrates was correlated with a 28% greater risk of premature death. “The message of our study is moderation as opposed to very low or very high intake in consumption of both fats and carbohydrates... We would hope that independent thinkers perhaps reconsider the guidelines and look at our data, and perhaps rather than putting limits on total fat and saturated fat, perhaps we should be putting limits on the amount of carbohydrates that people consume.”
