Women's Brain Health Initiative Welcomes National Dementia Strategy

Tuesday, July 4, 2017

Bill-C-233, an act respecting a national strategy for Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias, is being happily welcomed by the Women’s Brain Health Initiative (WBHI), a charitable organization that conducts research with the goal of battling brain disorders in women. Passed just last week, the bill means that within the next 180 days, a conference will be held by the Minister of Health to start developing the strategy; care partners and healthcare professionals from all provinces and territories will be able to help shape the strategy at this conference. Founder and President of WBHI Lynn Posluns stated that “dementia is a looming public health challenge for Canada and we are encouraged that the Parliament of Canada has seen the urgent need to develop a plan for dealing with it.” WBHI, among many other organizations, had been campaigning for a national dementia strategy for years. Twice as many women as men will develop dementia, and overwhelmingly more women take on the role of care partner for a loved one; research focuses primarily on men anyway. “While all people with dementia deserve equal attention, care and dignity,” says Posluns, “a national strategy must take into account the stark differences in how it hits men and women.”
