SUMMARY:Distinguished Speaker Seminar| Can biotechnology deliver cost\neffe
ctive liquid fuels from renewable feedstocks? by Professor Gregory\nStepha
 nopoulos
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:The importance of liquid fuels in transportation is well establ
ished\,\nyet\, there are presently no viable options for their cost-effect
ive\nproduction from renewable feedstocks.  During the past 15 years we\n
have been developing in Dr. Stephanopoulos’ lab a system for the\nconver
sion of gas mixtures of hydrogen (or CO) and CO2 to oils or\nalkanes. The
two-stage system comprises anaerobic fixation of CO2 and\nconversion of
the CO2 fixation product (for example\, acetate) to\nlipids\, from which
biodiesel can be produced. In another application\,\nthe CO2 fixation pro
duct is converted to alkanes. His work includes\nboth the engineering of t
he microbes _and _development of a process\nto achieve gas-to-liquid con
version in prototype systems. These\nsystems are scalable\, make no use of
land (beyond what is needed for\ngenerating renewable electricity for hyd
rogen production)\, do not\ncompete with food and are cost-competitive bas
ed on high-level cost\nanalysis. Dr. Stephanopoulos will present the essen
 tial features of\nthis process.
