Monday, January 6, 2020

Congratulation to Nanotechnology Engineering alumni Amr Abdelgawad (BASc 2016, Nanotechnology Engineering, MBET 2017) Youssef Helwa (BASc 2015, Nanotechnology Engineering, MASc 2017, electrical engineering), co-founders of NERv Technologies, and their colleagues, including Waterloo Engineering alumnus Abdallah El-Falou (MASc 2017, electrical engineering), for their latest win: first place in the Entrepreneurship World Cup (EWC).

This international pitch competition, held in the capital of Saudi Arabia saw more than 102,000 entrants from 187 countries compete for US $1 million in prizes and many valuable supports and services. With their first place win, NERv earned $500,000 US, support to expand into China, and in-kind support and services from a collection of EWC partners.

NERv has a patent pending on a sensory platform that detects post-surgical leaks from the gastrointestinal tract into the abdominal cavity within minutes. These leaks, known as anastomotic leaks, can cause potentially fatal problems for patients.
