Abstract:

Computer vision systems can play a role in providing care to individuals living with physical or cognitive disability. In this talk, Babak Taati will first briefly review vision-based systems to provide assistance to older adults with dementia and to assist with usability studies for this population. He will then present preliminary results on assessing the cognitive status of older adults by way of monitoring common activities of daily living. Early identification of dementia can potentially lead to improved quality of life both for older adults with dementia and their family and caregivers who can better plan informal/formal care in advance.

Biography:

Babak Taati is a Scientist at the Toronto Rehabilitation Institute - University Health Network. He also holds an Assistant Professor status in the Department of Computer Science at University of Toronto. His research applies computer vision technologies to solve real-world health care challenges in rehabilitation and the management of chronic conditions. A major focus of his work is to move away from the laboratory and contrived situations towards the development of computer vision systems that work reliably in natural settings, such as in the home or in long-term care.
