High school students to get hands-on lessons in health sciences

Students from more than 50 schools across Ontario will get hands-on lessons in the science of human movement at the University of Waterloo’s annual Kinesiology Lab Days event next week.

University of Waterloo co-op student dies in California collision

It is with deep sadness that the University of Waterloo must confirm the death of Gabriel Barsky, a student studying Computer Science in the Faculty of Mathematics. Gabriel, known as Gaby, aged 20, died as a result of injuries he sustained while travelling to work for a co-op work term in California on Wednesday, December 2, 2015.
 
His sister, Sabrina Barsky, said:
 
"Gaby was the golden boy. He was more than just my brother. Gaby's intelligence superseded his years.

Expert Advisory: Foodborne diseases sicken 1 in 10 worldwide

Professor Shannon Majowicz, of the University of Waterloo, is available to speak to the media on the World Health Organization’s report on the global burden of foodborne disease, released today.

She collected data on Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC) for the report. STEC is the same bacteria responsible for the E. coli outbreak in Walkerton, Ontario in May 2000.

Waterloo to lead new experiment aboard International Space Station

A spacecraft carrying supplies for a new physiology experiment led by a University of Waterloo researcher will launch to the International Space Station (ISS) on Thursday, the Canadian Space Agency announced.

Professor Richard Hughson, of the Faculty of Applied Health Sciences and the Schlegel-UW Research Institute for Aging, leads the experiment, which will link changes in astronauts’ hearts and blood vessels with specific molecules in the blood to determine why astronauts experience conditions that mimic aging-related problems and chronic diseases on earth.

Intact donation launches Waterloo centre to make communities more resilient to climate change

Intact Financial Corporation (TSX : IFC) and the University of Waterloo announced the creation of the Intact Centre on Climate Adaptation (ICCA) today. The centre will focus on research and building awareness for innovative adaptation solutions to climate change risks facing Canadian homeowners, communities, industries and governments.
