The Bank of Canada is expected to raise its interest rate today. The University of Waterloo has an expert available to talk about the impacts of the BOC’s decision and what that could mean for Canadians.

Jean-Paul Lam – Economics

Jean-Paul Lam is an Associate Professor of Economics at Waterloo and was formerly an assistant chief economist at the Bank of Canada. His research interests and expertise focus on central banking and monetary policy.

“With inflation running above two per cent and with an economy operating at full capacity, markets expect the  Bank of Canada to increase its overnight rate by 0.25% today. Faced with the growing  uncertainty coming from NAFTA and trade with the U.S, the Bank is expected to take a measured and prudent approach to increases in its overnight rate.”
