More than 6,100 students received degrees as part of the University of Waterloo's spring convocation
By Media RelationsMore than 6,100 students received degrees as part of the University of Waterloo's spring convocation. There were more than 5,000 undergraduate degrees and 1,000 graduate degrees handed out at a record 12 ceremonies.
“Convocation is a special time for any university and our new Waterloo graduates, like those who have gone before them, have worked hard to reach this tremendous milestone,” said Feridun Hamdullahpur, president and vice-chancellor of Waterloo. “Our graduates are joining a distinctive, global community of over 200,000 Waterloo alumni in more than 140 countries that will join them in strengthening their personal and professional success.”
Among the highlights of Waterloo's spring convocation:
Denise St. Marie (Arts), Timothy Walker (Arts) and German Augusto Gomez Rios (Science) received the Governor General’s Gold Medal for highest standing in a graduate degree program.
Jasmine Lynn Bacola (Applied Health Sciences), Shouzhen Gu (Math) and Kianna Wan (Science) received the Governor General’s Silver Medal for highest standing in an undergraduate degree program.
Brianna Hanson (Applied Health Sciences), Kim Tran Nguyen (Arts), Pelegia Sofia Cefalas (Engineering), Aaron Matthew Buckley (Environment), Zhengzu Bill Jin (Math), Ryan Robert Ferguson (Science), received the University of Waterloo Alumni Gold Medal in recognition of academic achievement.
Several faculty members also received recognition. Bernard R. Glick was named distinguished professor emeritus. Professor M. Tamer Özsu received the university professor designation. Lecturer Wayne H. Chang, Associate Professor Shannon Jennifer Dea, Laboratory Instructor Jake Fisher and Assistant Professor Julie Kate Seirlus received distinguished teacher awards. Professor Derek Armitage, Professor Amir Khajepour and Professor Mary Wells received awards for excellence in graduate supervision.
