By Media RelationsWATERLOO, Ont. (Thursday, April 26, 2012) – The University of Waterloo has named a respected university administrator and fundraising strategist as its new vice-president, advancement.
Kenneth McGillivray is currently the vice provost for global initiatives at the University of Southern California (USC). As vice provost, he plays a major role in increasing the university’s impact and visibility abroad, and provides leadership for USC’s global strategic plan, and in collaboration with university advancement, provides leadership for international fundraising strategy as part of USC’s US$6-billion campaign.
“Kenneth McGillivray has an exemplary reputation for fundraising and alumni development,” said Feridun Hamdullahpur, president & vice-chancellor of Waterloo. “His leadership, skill and international experience will help us build on our successes both past and current and we welcome him in his new role.”
Before joining USC, McGillivray served as secretary general of the Association of Pacific Rim Universities, the premier university consortium in the Pacific Rim. He also served as vice-president, academic of Raffles Education Corporation, the largest supplier of private education in Asia. He was director and interim associate vice-president, international at the University of British Columbia, and the senior roles he held at Carleton University include advancement coordinator and director of Carleton International.
“As a national and international university of reputation and consequence, it is a privilege for me to be leading the advancement efforts of this outstanding institution on behalf of our students, faculty, and staff and the communities we serve,” said McGillivray.
He received his BA in English literature from Carleton University, completed graduate research at Queen’s University, and earned his PhD in English literature from the University of London.
In his new position at Waterloo, McGillivray will develop an overall vision, strategy and integrated approach to the fundraising and alumni relations portfolio. He will also build relationships and introduce processes that will advance connections with internal and external stakeholders to ensure that Waterloo is maximizing its fundraising opportunities. The cultivation of relationships with alumni and the provision of programming and planning relevant to this community are other important aspects of this role.
The position of vice-president, advancement is new. It resulted from the division of the role of vice-president, external relations into two new positions. The other new role is vice-president, university relations, which Waterloo announced earlier this week. McGillivray's appointment is effective August 1.
