The University of Waterloo is pleased to announce that it has signed a five-year partnership agreement with CIVICUS, the global civil society alliance.

The agreement establishes an annual internship with CIVICUS for students enrolled in the Masters of Arts in Global Governance (MAGG) program, based at the Balsillie School of International Affairs

“We are thrilled to be partnering with such a world-class international non-governmental organization,” said John Ravenhill, director of the Balsillie School. “We are very excited that our students are going to be able to assist CIVICUS in carrying out the vital work that it does to create space for citizen participation in global governance.”

Students in the MAGG program are required to do a four-month internship. Under the terms of this agreement, the program will select one student each year to intern at CIVICUS’s headquarters in Johannesburg, South Africa.

“This is a wonderful partnership for CIVICUS,” said Dhananjayan (Danny) Sriskandarajah, Secretary-General of CIVICUS. “We hosted two Balsillie School interns in 2013. We were tremendously impressed by their professionalism, work ethic, and analytical and problem-solving skills. It is great to know that the Balsillie School of International Affairs will be sending us talented students for the next five years.”

As part of its 2013 strategic plan – “A Distinctive Past, A Distinctive Future” – the University of Waterloo has made a commitment to increasing opportunities for international internship and work placements for its students.

“Our goal is to produce ‘global ready graduates,’” said Nello Angerilli, associate vice-president, international at Waterloo. “In guaranteeing our students an opportunity to gain valuable work experience with a leading-edge international organization, we are one step closer to realizing this goal.”
