WATERLOO, Ont. (Monday, Nov. 28, 2011) - The University of Waterloo's VeloCity team will showcase the latest student start-up companies and innovative products at a special public event Wednesday, Nov. 30.

VeloCity Demo Day will be held from noon to 3 p.m. in the main foyer of the William G. Davis Computer Research Centre on the Waterloo campus.

"All of our best projects and promising startup companies will be exhibited during Demo Day and the local community is welcome to attend and meet our students," said Sean Van Koughnett, director of Waterloo's student success office. "This event provides an opportunity for VeloCity to showcase two phases of entrepreneurship: our residence students in the very early stages of a startup and our hub teams with incorporated and funded companies."

Among the many companies participating in VeloCity Demo Day:

• Lumos (gaming analytics)

• Maluuba (voice recognition software)

• Bookneto (university information sharing)

• MappedIn (Google maps indoors)

• Balute (hardware based company, creator of the eTar musical instrument)

Each of VeloCity's residence teams and hub companies are mentored by advisers who help them stay on track. Some projects focus on hardware design while others on software development. Still others are less technical and focus on all aspects of innovation.

Two $1,000 awards will be presented at Demo Day. The public will have an opportunity to vote for their favourite company.

VeloCity aims to develop Canada's next generation of successful entrepreneurs. Students take their first steps in building their startups and professional networks while living in the VeloCity residence on campus and then move up to the next level while in the VeloCity workspace at the Communitech Hub in Kitchener.
