The University of Waterloo named Robert Lemieux as dean of the Faculty of Science. Professor Lemieux succeeds current dean Terry McMahon, who completes his term on June 30, 2015.

He joins Waterloo from Queen’s University, where he is currently a professor in the Department of Chemistry and serves as associate dean (research) in the Faculty of Arts and Science.

“Robert Lemieux is an experienced administrator and respected scholar,” said Ian Orchard, vice-president academic and provost. “I am delighted to welcome Bob to Waterloo. He will strategically direct the Faculty of Science, and his input as a member of our senior administrative team will be highly valued as we continue on our mission to be recognized as one of the world’s top innovation universities.”

Professor Lemieux completed his undergraduate studies at Colgate University, Hamilton, New York, and his PhD at the University of Illinois. His past administrative service includes a one-year term as acting associate dean in the Faculty of Arts and Science at Queen’s and a five-year term as head of its Department of Chemistry.

As a scientist, Lemieux established a multi-disciplinary research program in the chemistry of organic materials that is recognized internationally for its innovative approaches to the design of compounds that form or induce ferroelectric liquid crystal phases found in high-performance microdisplay applications. The International Liquid Crystal Society recognized his contributions to the field of liquid crystals research with the 2012 Samsung Mid-Career Award and, earlier in his career, he won an Ontario Premier’s Research Excellence Award (2000) and one of the inaugural Queen’s Chancellor’s Research Awards (1999).
