WATERLOO, Ont. (Monday, Oct. 25, 2010) - Canadian Space Agency astronaut Dr. Robert (Bob) Thirsk will visit Waterloo Region this Thursday to share his experiences from last year’s sixth-month expedition aboard the International Space Station (ISS) with keen students and seniors.
WATERLOO, Ont. (Thursday, Oct. 21, 2010) - The University of Waterloo will graduate 1,707 students as well as award an honorary doctorate to His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, at fall convocation on Saturday.
As former president of the University of Waterloo, His Excellency is among four people being honoured at convocation. Also, Canadian Olympian Heather Moyse, a Waterloo graduate who won a gold medal at the Vancouver Winter Olympics, will receive an alumni achievement award from the faculty of applied health sciences.
WATERLOO, Ont. (Wednesday, Oct. 20, 2010) - Dr. Peter Ratcliffe, a renowned medical doctor and biological researcher, will reveal why he became a scientist to local high school students at a talk hosted by the University of Waterloo on Oct. 26.
Ratcliffe will give a morning lecture about why he entered the field of medicine and the kind of research he is currently conducting in his oxygen sensing group at the University of Oxford in England. He will also deliver an open academic lecture in the afternoon entitled How Cells Sense Oxygen.
WATERLOO, Ont. (Friday, Oct. 15, 2010) - The faculty of engineering at the University of Waterloo will next week celebrate the grand opening of its new $55-million Engineering 5 building, which contains a world- leading student design centre and an electromagnetic radiation laboratory.
The six-storey Engineering 5 also provides much-needed space for students, professors and researchers in the departments of mechanical and mechatronics engineering, systems design engineering, and electrical and computer engineering.

At the opening ceremony this morning, the university also announced the appointment of University of Waterloo professor Claudio Cañizares as the inaugural Hydro One Chair in Power Engineering. The Hydro One Chair in Power Engineering is funded by a $2.5-million agreement signed last year with Hydro One Networks Inc.
WATERLOO, Ont. (Monday, Sept. 27, 2010) - Joe MacInnis, a renowned deep-sea explorer and researcher, will share his insights into the catastrophic BP oil spill and its impact during a public talk this week at the University of Waterloo.
MacInnis, who was the first man to dive beneath the North Pole, will deliver this year's TD Canada Trust Walter Bean Lecture, entitled Oilstorm: Leadership Lessons from the Gulf of Mexico. It will be held Thursday, Sept. 30 at 4 p.m. in the Humanities Theatre, located in the J.G. Hagey Hall of the Humanities.
