Leadership Development Questions

Who can participate/apply? (Am I eligible?)

Due to the scope of the programs and the limited spaces available, regular full-time and part-time staff (as outlined in Policy 54) who have served at least one year by the start of the first module, may apply.

Please review the participant profile for each program to determine the right fit for you.

I’ve sent in my application, when will I know if I have been accepted into the program?

Candidates are notified within three weeks of the application closing date.

Note: Spaces are limited.  OHD may limit the number of participants from a unit.

Do I need permission from my manager/supervisor to apply?

Yes. We strongly encourage you to have a conversation with your supervisor/manager to determine which program is the right fit for you, and if this is the right time for you to be participating in a leadership program.

Please reach out to the OHD contact per program to continue this conversation.

What are the time commitments?

Attendance at all online synchronous and asynchronous sessions and in-person (face-to-face) events is mandatory. How much time you spend interacting with the content, will be different for each person.

Our expectations are that each participant invests time into practicing, reading, gathering feedback, and setting short and long-term goals. Participants will set 1-2 hours of meetings with their supporting manager each month to discuss and reinforce the learning.

Past participants have communicated that when time is invested, valuable development is gained.

Please review the Program Dates table for specific dates and times

(*Please note, all in-person events are subject to change in response to a change in government regulations, Public Health Guidelines and/or University policy.)

What is expected of my Supporting Manager?

Supervisors/managers are expected to attend and participate in the Supporting Manager sessions. Further, each month, Supporting Manager will meet with their participant to discuss the content and insights gained.

Ideally, Supporting Managers will fully engage with their participant by making time for the program. This may include taking items from the participant’s ‘plate’ to make time for learning, coaching, reinforcing the content, etc.

Does my immediate supervisor need to be my supporting manager?

Ideally, yes. However, in some units/departments, we recognize that may not be possible. Please reach out to the OHD contact per program to continue this conversation.

What does a one-on-one coaching session entail?

A member of the OHD team will meet individually with each participant in the program. Time will be scheduled in between the learning pathways. Coaching conversations will be guided by the goals the participant identifies throughout the program.

Do I need to attend all of the workshops?

Yes. Attendance at all online synchronous and asynchronous sessions and in-person (face-to-face) events is mandatory.

Please review the Program Dates table for specific dates and times

(*Please note, all in-person events are subject to change in response to a change in government regulations, Public Health Guidelines and/or University policy.)

Do I have to complete all of the Core Development workshops before I am accepted into the program?

Yes, it is strongly recommended to complete the Core Development workshops.

If that is not possible, participants will be encouraged to enroll and participate in the core development workshops in tandem with the leadership development program.

What is the cost to attend?

For University of Waterloo staff, as defined in Policy 54, there is no cost to attend OHD programming.

What if I have additional questions?

Please reach out to the OHD contact per program to continue this conversation.

The University of Waterloo acknowledges that much of our work takes place on the traditional territory of the Neutral, Anishinaabeg and Haudenosaunee peoples. Our main campus is situated on the Haldimand Tract, the land granted to the Six Nations that includes six miles on each side of the Grand River. Our active work toward reconciliation takes place across our campuses through research, learning, teaching, and community building, and is centralized within our Office of Indigenous Relations.
