As an experienced and established leader, the ability to enhance your leadership capabilities and increase your capacity to think strategically is fundamental. To support your development, Organizational & Human Development (OHD) is pleased to announce the Management Development Day for senior managers and leaders at the University of Waterloo, a one day opportunity to learn hands-on, practical approaches with other UWaterloo leaders and managers.  

The event features three keynotes and three complementary workshops to provide distinctive learning opportunities for managers to reflect on and further develop their management skills and practise in the key areas of leadership, change management, civility and inclusion, and employee engagement.

  • Jill Birch is CEO of BirchGrove, a leadership consultancy dedicated to developing 21st Century leaders. She is the former CEO of the Canadian Art Foundation, the publisher of Canadian Art magazine. Prior to this Jill has worked in senior leadership positions including vice president of fundraising and alumni at OCAD University, associate director, Schulich Executive Education Centre, and vice president of business development at Sheridan College. Jill discusses practical applications of relational leadership, and building trust and teams by breaking down silos to build a strong organization that affirms everyone’s voice and perspectives to contribute to the greater good of an institution
  • Sharone Bar-David, author and leading Canadian expert on workplace incivility, will explore the causes of what causes uncivil behaviour, from the unintentional and unconscious to ambiguous or unclear actions, and discuss how each of us can contribute to boosting civility in their work environment.  
     
  • Closing the day will be John Stix, Co-Founder and CEO of Fibernetics, that on employee engagement and creating a more balanced workplace with employees who care when you care about them, empower them, and further your skills as an authentic leader.

Workshops will be presented by both Jill Birch and Sharone Bar-David, as well as Sarah Jenner, National Manager of Mindful Employer and of Mary Ann Baynton & Associates. Sarah will be offering a session on making the workplace accommodation process easier on both the manager and the employee. 

The Management Development Day strengthens your understanding of leadership priorities and the accountabilities that come with a management position and builds upon your existing skill set as leader to enhance your working environment.  A networking lunch will be provided.  

This special event is part of Organizational & Human Development’s 10th Anniversary and the 60th anniversary of the University of Waterloo. Topics are also aligned with the featured keynotes and workshops at the 2017 Waterloo Staff Conference. Funding provided  by the Provost's Advisory Committee on Staff Compensation (PACSC) and the Staff Excellence Fund grant.

Please note: The Management Development Day has been specifically reserved for managers. The annual Waterloo Staff Conference is happening on April 5 & 6, 2017, and both staff and managers are encouraged to participate in this signature event.
