Get ready for Orientation

Thursday, August 31, 2017

Welcome to #UWOW17

Our leaders have a phenomenal Orientation planned for you. Once you arrive, make your way to the Student Life Centre (SLC). Check-in opens at 9:00 a.m. daily, and is available throughout the week.

To get the most from Orientation:

Pen and paper

Have your QR code, WatIAM and student number ready

When you registered for Orientation, a personalized QR code was generated for you in Portal. Before you arrive, have it ready in the app, take a screen shot or print it for easy access (and to minimize your wait in line!)

Your WatIAM username and password are the ones you used to check the status of your application on Quest. You'll need this username to access wifi on campus. If you’re stuck, read these FAQs or email

Your student number is an 8-digit number starting with a ‘2’ (you’ll find this number in your offer of acceptance).

Portal app

Check your Orientation and class schedule in Portal

If you're going to take part in all of the great activities we have planned for you, you're going to need to know where to go. Portal's Orientation widget has your most up-to-date schedule available. Your schedule is also accessible on the Orientation website.

Classes begin on Thursday, September 7. The “classes” widget will automatically appear on your homescreen in Portal to help you keep track of your class schedule.

Plan your journey

Please note the City of Waterloo is undergoing major construction in preparation for our new light rail transit system (ION LRT). Check for construction updates to avoid local road closures or take public transit.

If you aren't sure how to get to the SLC from your residence building, you can use the campus map in your Portal app for step-by-step instructions.

Pick up your WatCard

Bring a government-issued photo ID to pick up your WatCard, your official identification card for UWaterloo, in the SLC during Orientation. You can submit your photo for your WatCard before you arrive, or have it taken on campus.

Running shoes and an unmbrealla

Dress comfortably

At Orientation you’ll be both inside and out, rain or shine, so please dress comfortably, bring a reusable water bottle, and plan for the weather

In the event of inclement weather, check your schedule in the Portal app to find your event's rain location.
