SUMMARY:Characterizing Earthquake Risk in Canada
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:Please join PARTNERS FOR ACTIONin hosting special guests\nfrom
NATURAL RESOURCES CANADA (NRCAN) at evolv1 on THURSDAY\, APRIL\n27TH A
T 9:30 AM EDT to learn more about earthquake risk in\nCanada.  \n\n \n
NRCan recently completed a national-scale assessment of earthquake\nrisk\,
and this talk will summarize the project context\, inputs and\nassessment
methods\, findings\, and implications for disaster risk\nreduction. The
economic and life-safety risks Canadians face from\nearthquakes will be hi
ghlighted\, including a framework that combines\nphysical and social vulne
rability factors\nto identify the jurisdictions most at risk from eart
 hquakes\nnationally.  \n\nYou will also learn about RISKPROFILER\n[ht
tps://riskprofiler.ca/].CA—a new platform aimed at building\nresiliency
to seismic risk through planning and emergency management\nactions.

SUMMARY:Buying Out the Floodplain: Recommendations for Strategic Relocation
 \nPrograms in Canada
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:With increasingly severe flood events\, Canadian communities re
quire a\nfull range of tools to protect people and property. Property buyo
 ut\nprograms—which involve the relocation of high-risk neighbourhoods\nv
ia the government acquisition of property—are considered among the\nmost
effective forms of risk management since they directly reduce\nexposure t
o flooding. However\, buyout programs are often resisted by\nlocal governm
ents and their citizens. For local governments\, buying\nout property is e
xpensive and takes away a source of tax revenue.\nWhile for citizens\, hom
e buyouts can be traumatic and might mean\nabandoning a home or neighbourh
ood lived in for generations.\n\nThat is why in 2020\, Partners for Action
began a research project\nfunded by the Max Bell Foundation to draw on le
ssons for current and\npast property buyout programs and to highlight the
trade-offs\ngovernments must consider when designing new programs.\n\nAfte
r a culmination of two years of research\, we are pleased to\nannounce the
launch of the final report.\n\nPlease join us on WEDNESDAY\, APRIL 12TH A
T 1PM ET where Associate\nProfessor Jason Thistlethwaite will be joined by
Graham Watt\, Manager\nof Strategic Initiatives/Flood Recovery at the Cit
y of Grand Forks\, to\ndiscuss main findings and recommendations for futur
 e buyout programs.
