C. Henry Smith Oratorical Peace Speech Contest

The Peace Speech contest was established in order to foster continuing thought and dialogue about peace issues. Each year, Conrad Grebel University College has had several students participate in this event. These speeches will be judged and cash prizes will be awarded. Many of them have gone on to great success in the bi-national contest. Submissions must be in by Friday, March 16^th @ 4:00pm to Rachel Reist (rreist@uwaterloo.ca or the PACS Office) or to Ed Janzen (ejjanzen@uwaterloo.ca or the Student Services Office).

Who can present a speech?

• Any resident or associate of Conrad Grebel
• Any student enrolled in a PACS plan

What are the rules?

1. Follow the general theme of the application of the Christian peace position to contemporary concerns:
   • Sample topics might include pacifism, economic peacemaking, religious conflict and reconciliation, women’s issues as peace issues, biotechnology, and Christian ethics, how to work against racism from a faith perspective, environmental concern through the eyes of the peacemaker, etc. (Topics are not limited to these suggestions.   
2. Maximum 1500 words and 5-8 minutes long, with no more than 10% quoted material
3. Speeches will be judged on six criteria: topic, content, delivery, introduction, conclusion, and creativity
4. On the day of the contest, speeches will be video recorded and a copy of each speech must be submitted to the judges after it has been spoken
5. The 1^st place speech will be sent to the bi-national contest to compete with speeches written by students from across North America. The top three orations at the bi-national level will also receive an additional cash award
