Pharmacists prove essential in influenza immunization battle

As debates around vaccination rage on, flu immunization rates in Ontario have actually risen by half a million doses since 2012, thanks to pharmacists.

Pharmacists are key players in immunization efforts, according to experts from Waterloo’s School of Pharmacy in the Faculty of Science.

Assistant Professors Tejal Patel and Sherilyn Houle Receive Innovation Fund Grants

With the pharmacist scope of practice expanding across Canada, further research is increasingly important in assessing how pharmacists can best interact with their patients. 

Two School of Pharmacy assistant professors are conducting such research and have received funding to support their initiatives. Dr. Sherilyn Houle and Dr. Tejal Patel were awarded Innovation Fund Grants from the Canadian Foundation for Pharmacy (CFP).

This week, alumna Marisa Ramandt (Rx2015) received the Commitment to Care & Service Student Leadership Award in Toronto. This award recognizes her strong academic performance and leadership skills with pharmacy-related organizations and professional activities.

Antibiotic apocalypse topic of the School of Pharmacy’s fourth annual public lecture

96% of patients who ask physicians to prescribe antibiotics will receive them.

To School of Pharmacy assistant professors Brett Barrett and Kelly Grindrod, that is a problem. Antibiotics are effective tools for fighting infectious diseases, but misinformation surrounds when and why they should be used. The public lecture delivered by Grindrod and Barrett on November 12th acknowledged the important contribution antibiotics have made and continue to make to human health and addressed the many myths surrounding the medications.
