Waterloo Pharmacy’s Continuing Professional Development team is excited to announce the launch of a new online course - Pharmacogenomics for Healthcare Providers: The Basics. The CCCEP-accredited course was developed by the award-winning team at the University of Waterloo’s Centre for Extended Learning (CEL) and uses the latest innovations in online learning to provide 8.5 Continuing Education Units of content.
Pharmacogenomics is the study of how genes affect an individual’s response to drugs, and the course reviews therapeutic areas where pharmacogenomics can influence healthcare provider decisions. The participant begins by completing a self-assessment of their genetics knowledge and an introduction to pharmacogenomics. This is followed by in-depth lessons on:
- Gastrointestinal diseases
- HLA Types
- Current State of Pharmacogenetics
These topics are explored through case-based application exercises and other multimedia elements, including animations. The course includes a discussion board where students can interact with course author Blake Ziegler, a pharmacist and adjunct assistant professor with Waterloo Pharmacy. CEL and Waterloo Pharmacy have produced numerous award-winning courses and their interactive design ensures an engaging learning experience.
