The Distinguished Teacher Award, Waterloo's most prestigious teaching accolade, is awarded by the University Senate each year in recognition of a continued record of excellence in teaching at the University of Waterloo. The recipients are chosen by a committee of students, faculty, staff and alumni based on nominations from the university community.
Distinguished Teaching Award 2016
Philosophy Adjunct Professor, Katie Plaisance (Associate Professor, Associate Chair, Undergraduate Studies, Knowledge Integration) has been recognized for her excellence and dedication with the honour of the University of Waterloo 2016 Distinguished Teacher Award.
Katie has been a valuable foundational member of the Knowledge Integration program. She is known for being approachable to students and makes herself available to meet outside of class to discuss matters that are affecting them – both personally and academically. One undergraduate student commented that “Katie has the ability to challenge her students while simultaneously building academic confidence. Every student that takes a class with Katie grows as a writer, philosopher, learner, and listener.”
Distinguished Teaching Award 2012
Philosophy Professor, Tim Kenyon, currently serving as Associate Dean (Research) in the Faculty of Arts, was recognized for excellence in teaching with the Distinguished Teacher Award in 2012
Tim is highly regarded for his "great ambition for student success." Students note that he incorporates memorable examples and humour into his lectures while encouraging student questions. His "mastery in the classroom" challenges their understanding of the course material while maintaining a positive atmosphere within the classroom.
Distinguished Teaching Award 1995
Professor Emeritus, Richard Holmes received the Distinguished Teaching Award in 1995. Professor Holmes retired from the Department of Philosophy in 2009.
Distinguished Teaching Award 1982
Distinguished Professor Emeritus, Bernard Suits received the Distinguished Teaching Award in 1982. Professor Suits passed away in 2007.
