The Extravagant Universe: The accelerating Universe and the  2011 Nobel Prize in Physics

We will present the evidence that we live in an expanding universe  and describe the observations which led to the surprising result that the  expansion is accelerating.  We will discuss why this result is surprising  and some of its implications - all of which contributed to this research  being awarded the 2011 Nobel Prize in Physics.  An important consequence  of this result is that, until dark energy is understood, we cannot  predict how the Universe will end.
