Witness the latest act in the ancient cosmic ballet at the Observatory!
- Telescope viewing beginning with partial eclipse at 10:30 PM (observatory / rooftop; access from 3rd floor of PHY)
- Totality ("blood moon") begins at 11:41 PM and ends at 12:43 AM
- Partial eclipse ends around 1:45 AM
The observatory is hosting a special event for the January 2019 lunar eclipse. The main observatory telescope will be trained on the moon, along with other telescopes on the rooftop, for public viewing of the Earth's shadow crossing the full moon. Sunlight from the all the sunsets and sunrises around the world will pass though the Earth's atmosphere and into its shadow. A reddish glow will gradually sweep across the Moon over a two hour period, with the Full Moon appearing completely reddened prior to midnight!
Note: If the weather turns out to be cloudy, telescope observing will not be possible; special arrangements will apply:
- If the weather is partly cloudy, we may elect to wait it out

The map below shows the closed main entrance (red icon) and alternate access points (blue icons) from EIT and the back of PHY. The entrance across from RCH is the closest to PHY 313 and the observatory.
