This talk will detail two Canadian projects in the area of space commercialization and exploration. The Next Generation Canadarm is a recently completed R&D program to develop key enabling technologies and operational techniques to enhance and preserve Canada’s leadership position in On-Orbit Servicing of satellites. The OSIRIS-REx Laser Altimeter is Canada’s contribution to a NASA asteroid study and sample return mission. The launch is planned in 2016 and will study and return a sample of asteroid 101955 Bennu (formerly designated 1999 RQ36), a carbonaceous asteroid, to Earth in 2023 for detailed analysis.
The University of Waterloo acknowledges that much of our work takes place on the traditional territory of the Neutral, Anishinaabeg and Haudenosaunee peoples. Our main campus is situated on the Haldimand Tract, the land granted to the Six Nations that includes six miles on each side of the Grand River. Our active work toward reconciliation takes place across our campuses through research, learning, teaching, and community building, and is centralized within our Office of Indigenous Relations.
