Paul ButlerDr. Paul Butler

Staff Scientist,
Department of Terrestrial Magnetism
Carnegie Institution of Washington

Dr. Butler's research interests include observational astrophysics, stellar spectroscopy, precision Doppler instrumentation, extrasolar planets, Sun-like stars, supergiants and Cepheid variable stars.

Dr. Butler and his colleagues have developed the most precise method to date for finding planets found orbiting nearby stars: the precision Doppler velocity technique. His work is part of a long-term project to survey ~2,000 nearby Sun-like stars.
