Characterization infrastructure for optical terminals in quantum communications with satellites

Youn Seok Lee, Institute for Quantum Computing, University of Waterloo

Abstract:

We develop a characterization platform for aberrations and polarizations of optical components in quantum communication with satellites. The aberration characterization system utilizes a scanning pentaprism technique for precise measurements of local wavefront slopes. The transmitted wavefront is reconstructed by a conventional least-squares method with the measured precision better than 10nm. Our polarization characterization system employs a six-axis collaborative robot arm, enabling the polarization characterization at any position and direction with consistent precision. An imaging polarimeter analyzes incident polarization states while monitoring the variation of the angle of incidence caused by imperfect orientations of the robot arm. The two systems support the development of optical components in Canada's Quantum Encryption and Science Satellite (QEYSSat) mission.
