Jake Malliaros: Our First virtual Convocation Host

University Convocation is obviously a little different this year, given the limitations placed on social gatherings due to COVID-19 and the global pandemic. Still, the occasion warrants a celebration for its graduates, and this fall we’re pleased to offer a live, virtual reception to allow the Class of 2020 to share this important milestone with the Faculty, fellow graduates, friends and family.

Alex Krolewski wins the AMTD Postdoctoral Fellowship to explore the origin and composition of the universe

Our universe is a vast expanse, and while we can stare up at the night sky and wonder at the mysteries our sky holds, there is so much more that we can’t see with just our eyes. Using today’s powerful telescopes, combined with our computational ability to interpret enormous amounts of data, we are now at a time when cosmologists can do more than just look upon our skies with wonder – they can now make measurements, and calculate theoretical models of the far reaches in our observational universe.

Waterloo Ph.D. candidate is awarded the Stoicheff Scholarship

The 2020 Stoicheff Scholarship was awarded to Matthew Robbins, University of Waterloo, for leadership in developing the theory of Bose-Einstein condensates as a novel detector of gravitational waves that would open a new window on the universe for astronomical observations.
