The School of Planning is a unique community of students, staff, faculty and supporters with vibrant and formal ties to the profession of Planning. Unlike typical university programs, we begin by recognizing that you have not only chosen to study Planning, but in doing so have also chosen a career path. A critical part of being a professional in Planning is a commitment to the ideals of the Public Interest and a commitment to the code of practice that governs what we do. The Ceremony of Induction is our chance to celebrate the beginning of your educational journey and through this rite of passage, introduce you to the profession.
Our first Ceremony of Induction was celebrated in September 1999, and has since become a proud tradition for the School and the incoming class. It is an event that combines a relaxed networking event, and a formal ceremony where students are introduced to the School as they cross the stage to be welcomed by our School Director, Dr. Markus Moos, and a Member of The Ontario Professional Planners Institute (OPPI), Representatives from University Administration, School of Planning Alumni, Planning Student Association, and local stakeholders will also be present to witness your induction and bring their congratulations.
Why should you attend?
The ceremony presents our incoming students with another opportunity to get to know their new peers outside of the classroom. You will have the chance to meet senior students and your professors in a less formal environment. It’s an opportunity to converse with the support staff in the School of Planning who are there to help students at every step of the way. Lastly, The Ceremony of Induction is a great way to get involved in the School of Planning community. Students will hear from the president of the Planning Student’s Association (PSA) about how to get involved and the fun events the PSA hosts throughout the school year. Additionally, the induction ceremony is a great volunteer opportunity for future years with tons of positions available yearly!
Parents and Supporters
The ceremony provides parents and supporters with the opportunity to get involved in their student’s academic career. Typically, parents have a very limited number of opportunities to experience the campus, get inside academic buildings or even meet the people that are delivering the program. The Ceremony of Induction provides parents and supporters with the chance to experience the School’s community first hand and explore the School’s learning environment. Lastly, it’s a chance to reflect and share a proud moment with your student, thinking of all the hard work that has led them to this key time of their lives and the challenges ahead. The next time you will see them cross a stage is when they receive their degree! (and we will be there to celebrate with you again).
Faculty and Staff
The faculty and staff love the Induction Ceremony. It provides faculty members with a chance to meet the bright minds of their future classes while providing staff members with the opportunity to interact with the new students for the first time. Both faculty and staff members have a limited number of opportunities to meet students outside of the classroom which is why they both love The Ceremony of Induction! It is also wonderful to share this experience with the parents and supporters of our students. Unlike high school, parental involvement in University life is very limited, however we still value the chance to get to meet the supporters behind our students!
The Ceremony of Induction is a wonderful tradition in the School of Planning and should not be missed. We really value the chance to welcome you in this ceremony, which is the perfect balance to our other favourite ceremony – The Graduation Luncheon. See you in September!
Stay tuned for the official date announcement and further information on the Induction Ceremony if you are an incoming undergraduate or graduate student for Fall 2021.
